Happy Holidays!
Here is the December version of the award-winning Voyage of Your Life eZine. How did it get to be December?
Winter
is upon us, and this is the time of year for reflection. Usually
that means I will be visited by three spirits at some point, which is a
good and necessary thing. After the final spirit shows what he
has to show, the reply from Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge remains a great
motivation for me: "Assure me that I yet may change these shadows you have shown me, by an altered life!" Is
there someone you would like to share this newsletter with? If so,

Get Out of Your Own Way (Part 2)
 Last
month this article was about procrastination, one of the most
popular methods of self-sabotage. As we wrap up 2010, I
would like to cover another technique that some of us use: negative self-talk.
Many
times it is so barely noticeable that you just accept it and go on.
You start with a great idea, dream, or goal that you want to
pursue. Quietly and without invitation here comes your inner
critic, that little voice that talks you out of things. Here is
what your voice says. "Maybe this was not such a good idea; this
will take too much energy and time and money; you are being selfish to
think you deserve something this good." Before you know it, the
beautiful dream you once had is beaten down, battered, and barely able
to move. It does not appear as appealing as it once did, and you
abandon it on the side of the road of good intentions. Does any
of this sound familiar?
To
combat negative self-talk, the first step is to be aware when it is
happening. Is your inner critic all bad? I do not think so.
Sometimes having a devil's advocate point of view is appropriate,
and it helps refine your goal. The important thing is to hold on
to the big idea, dream, goal or whatever you want to accomplish and not
give up because of some negative inner talk. The
critique needs to be balanced and weighted appropriately, along with
the positive and enthusiastic aspects. The goal is to have fair
and full disclosure, so that you are in control and can make an informed decision
about moving forward to pursue your goal. It would not be fair if
the inner critic talked you out of moving forward without weighing all
the other factors.
To
keep it fair and balanced, listen to the critic and jot down any
objections, then allow yourself time to evaluate them when you have the
right energy and time to respond. The key is for you to be in
control of the decision-making, until you can manage that little voice
in your head.
I
would love to help you get over negative self-talk and help you alter
your inner voice so that it is respectful and supportive. Contact me when you want to get started.
Year-end Review (This Month's Challenge)
 Last
month my challenge was to expand your knowledge by getting to know
the stars. I trust you were able to take some time and look for
constellations at night. There is always something cool happening
in the night sky.
Your
challenge for the rest of the month is to reflect on 2010. What
did you love about it? Were there things that you would have changed?
Based on your reflections, December is a great time to jot
down one or two things you want to work on in 2011.
Many
people make new year's resolutions, while others just use the new year
as a point of new beginning. Either way, take some time over this
holiday season between the football games, food, and other festivities
to note some things you want to get done next year. I know I do
not have to tell you that individuals with written goals and supporting
plans of action are the ones who are successful in making real changes
in their lives.
So get going on your list. As always, feel free to contact me when you need some inspiration or to help with your evaluation.
